The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace and Saint Maria Goretti in Nettuno is the sanctuary that houses the body of the young girl, martyr of purity. The sanctuary dates back to the 16th century and hosts the crypt of Saint Maria Goretti and displays the wooden statue of Our Lady of Grace. Tradition holds that the wooden statue arrived on the shores of Nettuno in 1550 from England, after the Anglican schism. At that time in England, Catholic churches were being confiscated and statues of saints were being destroyed. Some sailors smuggled the statues of Our Lady of Grace and other saints onto a ship bound for Naples; however, due to a violent storm, the ship landed in Nettuno. The statues of Our Lady of Grace, Saint Roch, and Saint Sebastian were placed in the then small church of the Annunciation. This arrival was interpreted as a sign from the Madonna, so the three statues remained there, where they are still kept today.
